Overcoming Sin (Part 5)

Addict yourself to Christ

When Jesus died on the cross, He saved us from the penalty of sin. When He rose from the dead, He saved us from the Power of sin. Through the power of our risen Saviour, sin cannot dominate us.

Ephesians 1:18-20 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, [19] And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, [20] Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

Ephesians 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Romans 6:12-14 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. [13] Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. [14] For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

The simple, yet profound message these verses share is the answer to overcoming sin.

Christ is power. His power dwells in us, because He dwells in us. When we yield to Christ’s life through us, it is His power working in us. That power destroys the dominating force sin may hold on the child of God.

We overcome sin, by accessing the power of Christ in us. We access this power by submitting, or giving way, to Christ’s will, not ours.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Submit carries the idea of habitually yielding, then being addicted to doing so. We need to be addicted to the Saviour, not sin.

Being addicted to Christ brings true freedom through the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Praising God puts Him at the forefront of our minds. Having Him at the forefront of our minds will make us sensitive towards Christ in us.

Psalm 61:8 So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

I am not talking about sinless perfection, but sinless provision. You can access victory moment by moment as you addict yourself to Christ. Praise Him, think on Him, be aware of Him. Make prayer an unceasing event. Make your thought life your prayer life. Read, memorize, and meditate on the Word of God. Fill your life with Christ and Christ will fill you to overflowing. Sin can’t rule in a Christ filled vessel.
